Team Sunderland beat Lancaster University 17-14 in a cup match at Houghton Rugby Club.

Sunderland opened the scoring through Hindmarsh 10 minutes in before Lancaster quickly equalised.

Both sides traded tries again in the second period before Sanderson slotted a penalty in the final play.

Sunderland made several changes to their team from the Durham fixture with Blackburn moving over to outside centre for this game.

The home side broke the deadlock when 10 minutes in Hindmarsh got onto the end of a string of passes to score in the corner, Sanderson would convert from the byline.

Into the second period and after Blackburn made ground from his linebreak, Sanderson capitalised on this momentum driving over from close range to score, he then converted his own try to regain the lead for this side.

Lancaster would then pull level after their flanker slipped through a gap in the defence to score with a tight finish in the corner, the fly-half held his composure to convert from a difficult position.

After Sunderland put in some quality go-forward in the final minutes their effort was rewarded when they awarded a penalty in front of the posts, Captain Sanderson would hold his nerve to score from the tee winning Sunderland the game.
