Sunderland Men’s Tennis 1st’s were forced to hand Sheffield Hallam 2nd’s a walkover win as they were unable to field a team for Wednesday’s match.

It is the second time this season that Sunderland have conceded a match, after they had to withdraw from the Northern Conference Cup tie against Lancaster last month.

As a result, Sunderland are now bottom of the BUCS Northern 4B league after being deducted points for this walkover.

They are level with Teesside 1st’s on minus two points but have slipped below their rivals on games difference. Teesside were set to host Hull 1st’s on Wednesday but the result is yet to be displayed on the BUCS website.

In Wednesday’s other fixture, the league’s two unbeaten sides Leeds Beckett 6th’s and Durham 5th’s met in Leeds.

It was Beckett who extended their winning start on their home indoor courts, winning 10-2 to ensure they will end the year top of the league. Durham now sit just behind in 2nd place.

All six sides now have a lengthy break until the next round of scheduled league fixtures on January 31.
