COTM football 4thsThe University of Sunderland Men’s Football 4th team were beaten 4-1 after a superb comeback from York St John’s 4ths in the Clash of the Minsters.

A goal from Alex Morris early in the first half was cancelled out by the visitors from the penalty spot just before the break to make it 1-1. York St. John then went ahead on 70 minutes and added two more goals before the final whistle to seal the win.

It took just eight minutes for Sunderland to take the lead through Morris. His looping free-kick from the half way line evaded everyone, including the goalkeeper, to nestle in the top corner.

York were unlucky not to equalise two minutes later though after sloppy defensive play put the visitors’ striker through on goal but his shot ran just past the post.

They did get themselves level though just as the scrappy first half was coming to an end. Asad Ibrahimi was adjudged to have bought down the York St. John player inside the box and the resulting penalty sent goalkeeper Pye the wrong way.

Sunderland started the second half strongly and the first 15 minutes were played entirely in the York half, but the home side were unable to create any clear cut chances.

York did eventually come back into the game and got themselves ahead when a neat ball threaded between the Sunderland centre backs found its way into the path of the striker who passed it round the goalkeeper to put the visitors 2-1 ahead.

With just 20 minutes left, Sunderland pushed for an equaliser, leaving just two at the back at times.

But they were punished further in the final minutes of the game as York managed to score 2 more goals on the counter attack as the game finished 4-1.

Player-manager Martin Kelly said: “Silly decision making cost us the game. The effort was there although it wasn’t good enough on the day.

“We need to draft a few new players in but its varsity and things start slow. Hopefully things will improve.”

When asked his hopes for the season ahead he replied: “The aim this year as fourth team manager is to gain promotion and hopefully build for the next lot of players coming through.”
