It ended all square in an entertaining 2-2 draw in the Wearside derby between University of Sunderland 3rds and University of Sunderland 2nds, and Whitfield thinks his side could have earned all three points if they took their chances.

The home side took the lead through Jamie Grima in the first half, but the University 2nds soon turned that score line around as they went 2-1 up.

Whitfield was confident that his side could find another goal despite losing the match, and they did, as Tom Webster’s goal guaranteed that both sides shared the spoils.

“I was happy with our performance. We got a point against an excellent Sunderland side so I definitely see it as positive result,” said the manager.

“I said I’ll be happy just as long as the lads enjoy it, and they did more than that as they earned us a crucial point.

“We had a few chances but made the wrong decisions at critical times. We were right up for the game so the character and the way we equalised was never in doubt.”

The draw was not enough to move Sunderland outside of the relegation zone. They sit bottom of the Northern 6B league on goal difference.
