University of Sunderland Women’s Basketball 1st’s cruised to a 72-43 victory over University of Sheffield Women’s 2nd’s in their BUCS Basketball Northern Group 3B fixture.

Sunderland had to weather an early storm but they coasted to an early 26-10 lead by the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Sheffield crumbled under mounting pressure from Sunderland, letting the home side go into the halfway point leading 41-28.

The third quarter saw Sheffield attempting to spark a comeback, but Sunderland remained comfortable and increased the score difference by two points.

The final quarter saw the visitors fall under the Wearsiders pressure once again, seeing them round out a successful night winning by 29 points.

The game was a battle at the bottom of the table as second from bottom Sunderland faced a Sheffield side looking for their first win in the group.

The team from South Yorkshire started brighter gaining a four point lead early in the contest.

The Wearsider’s quickly gained their feet and sloppy defending from Sheffield saw Magdalena Cybulska break down the right to score an easy lay-up, helping them to establish a hefty lead.

The North East side’s increased pressure paid off from the get-go as Cybulska broke, carrying the ball from the right-hand side to the left and converting a two pointer whilst under pressure from the away side.

This continued as again club president Cybulska broke down the left to score an easy lay-up and draw the foul for a free throw that she converted for a third point.

The rest of the quarter saw the home sides immense pressure building with the Sheffield side being unable to counter it, maintaining their healthy lead.

The Sunderland women built on the first two quarters and Ray-Olero quickly went from converting two free throws following a foul whilst she broke to converting two points after the ball fell to her after pressure underneath the basket from the Wearside team.

Sheffield began to gain a slight foothold into the game with Fernandez causing issues breaking down the right converting multiple points and getting enough space to convert a comfortable three.

However, Sheffield’s hopes of a comeback disappeared as they returned to their sloppy plays of previous quarters, which Sunderland capitalised on.

The Club president sent a pass over to Hughes who sat slightly to the right of the basket who’s shot was converted by Gupit.

This happened again as Cybulska sent a long pass over to Gouda who finds Valen in acres of space for the easiest two points of the night and secure the victory.

Sunderland look for another win when they host University of Huddersfield Women’s 1st’s on February 14.
