Sunderland FoL Monkwearmouth continued their perfect start to the season getting their 6th win out of 6 after a 5-0 win over Northampton Town FC Scholars.

Four goals in quick succession from Arron Thompson, Codie Howe, Max Nelson and Harry Johnson respectively, put the game to bed for Sunderland before the half-time whistle.

Thompson topped off a dominant performance by grabbing his second goal ten minutes into the second half to extend Sunderland’s lead at the top of the National Football Youth League (Midlands)

After an even first few minutes Sunderland were awarded a penalty 20 minutes in when Alex Ramshaw was brought down in the box.

Arron Thompson stepped up to the spot but a good save from the Northampton keeper kept it 0-0.

Five minutes later Sunderland took the lead after a Harry Johnson shot hit the post and fell straight into the path of Thompson who tapped it in to make up for his penalty miss.

Another goal quickly followed two minutes later when centre back Codie Howe headed home a Thompson corner, getting himself a rare goal to make it 2-0.

The onslaught continued as Sunderland got another in the 31st minute when Howe’s centre back partner Max Nelson scrambled the ball in from another Thompson corner.

Sunderland made it 4-0 before half time after a Ramshaw shot hit the post and Johnson was there for the follow up in the 43rd minute.

The second half was more of the same for the red and whites and Thompson soon got his second of the game after a brilliantly worked team goal in the 54th minute.

The win keeps Sunderland top of the NFYL Midlands division and this game see’s the team get their 5th clean sheet in a row, which Head Coach Jamie Chandler is very pleased with.

He admitted: “We conceded too many goals last season and it was something the whole team wanted to work on. We sat down and looked at it. It’s a team effort, midfielders and attackers as well as defenders”

Speaking about the performance Chandler also said: “We knew it was going to be a tough game but the boys were brilliant.”
