Sunderland Ladies suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to Manchester City Women on Sunday as their opponents maintained their 100% record in the Women’s Super League.

A brace from Nikita Paris and an Izzy Christiansen goal gave City a 16th consecutive win in all competitions this season.

Paris opened the scoring in the 36th minute, tapping in from Christiansen’s headed cross before the England duo combined again to double City’s lead early in the second half.

Paris fired in a cross and Christiansen rose highest to head the visitors into a 2-0 lead at Mariners Park.

Sunderland Ladies battled hard but came undone while trying to get back into the game as Paris raced clear and saw her effort canon in off the post to wrap up the points for City.

Sunderland Ladies Manager Melanie Copeland told FAWSL.com: “It’s not a game we targeted to win, but we wanted to make it difficult for Manchester City and we did for large periods of the game, and I think when you defend for that long you’ll do well not to concede any goals.

“I’m proud of the girls, they delivered the game plan we wanted, but we’re obviously disappointed with some of the goals.

“We know Manchester City play with width and we felt the formation we chose was best suited for this game, we practiced it in a friendly with Durham and the girls were comfortable doing it.”

Sunderland Ladies next match is at home to Brighouse Town LFC in the Women’s FA Cup 4th Round on Sunday. Kick-off at Mariners Park is 2pm.
