Sunderland Men’s Futsal caused an upset in the Northern Conference Cup as they beat Leeds 1st 5-4.

Leeds 1st were huge favourites to win the game as they compete 2 leagues above Sunderland 1st but after a dramatic finale the hosts sealed there place in the Quarter Finals.

The game began tensely but it was Sunderland who started the better after captain Lewis McKay sent a teasing cross in the box for Tom Bailey to tap in the opener.

Quickly after, Sunderland’s start got even better as Anas Al-Essa dribbled past three Leeds players on the edge of the pitch and doubled Sunderland’s lead.

Sunderland looked to be going into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead however, minutes before the whistle blew McKay slipped and his hand touched the ball to give an unfortunate penalty away.

Goalkeeper Ahmed Abdelraouf managed to deflect the penalty onto the post but it cannoned back to the Leeds penalty taker for him to slot home and put Leeds back in the game.

Leeds put more pressure on the hosts after half time and Sunderland struggled to contain them in the first couple of minutes and needed Abdelraouf to keep their lead as he made a couple of very good saves.

However, the lead did not last much longer as a quick double from the visitors put them in front.

As Leeds kept on pushing Sunderland found themselves more room to counter attack and did so when McKay tackled the opposition and found Rany Youssef who squared it to Victor Oladele for an easy tap in.

Sunderland counter attacked once again and Bailey found space in the middle as he cut inside and put the hosts back in the lead.

Leeds weren’t behind for long though as a great piece of futsal set up a dramatic final five minutes where both sides felt they could win it.

With one minute remaining Leeds pushed for the winner but it was Oladele who grabbed the winner as another counter attack paid off and slotted home between the keeper’s legs.

Abdelraouf had to keep alert though as in the final 10 seconds he made a great save to ensure Sunderland were through to the last 16.

Man of the Match Abdelraouf commented: “We were playing against one of the best teams, they are top of division 2 which is higher than us by two divisions.

“We played a good game, every player performed well can’t remember anyone who wasn’t good. The other team knew what they were doing but they couldn’t break through our solid defending”.

In the next round Sunderland will host Newcastle 2nd as they look to reach the semi finals.
