University of Sunderland men’s tennis 1sts lost 6-0 to the Leeds Beckett University 6th team on Wednesday afternoon.

Leeds won three singles matches and a doubles tie to complete a comfortable win on the outdoor artificial grass courts of Silksworth Tennis Centre.

Sunderland were missing three regular players and were forced to start 2-0 down due to having only three men available.

Their three man squad consisted of president Paddy Horne, Liam Malcolm and Chris Hay.

Leeds Beckett’s side was made up by captain James Parker, Joe Silvestre, Manuel Cano and James Eager.

Silvestre beat Sunderland’s Malcolm 6-0 6-0 in the first match to finish.

Leeds’ Cano then proved too strong for Hay as he won by the same scoreline shortly after to put Leeds 4-0 up overall.

Horne provided a tougher test but was unable to prevent Leeds’ Eager from taking a 6-4 6-2 victory in the final singles match.

Leeds captain Parker fielded a team of himself and Cano for the doubles match, which they won 6-2 6-2 against Sunderland duo Horne and Hay.

The result leaves Sunderland 5th in the BUCS tennis Northern 4B league – while Leeds Beckett remain top as they extend their 100 per cent winning start.

Sunderland next travel to the league’s bottom team Teesside on November 29 with both sides looking for their first win of the season.
