Stephen Callen’s first-half goal was enough to condemn Marske United to their first league away defeat this season.

Sunderland RCA missed the chance to double their lead when Reece Noble had his penalty saved by Robert Dean.

srcabadgeRCA came into the game on the back of a 2-2 draw with Guisborough Town, while Marske had a free weekend due to Whitley Bay’s involvement in the FA Cup.

Marske United had the game’s first chance when Nathan Mulligan forced goalkeeper James Talbot into a save after he received the  ball from Craig Gott.

On the half-hour mark, the visitors went close again when Liam O’Sullivan sent his shot narrowly wide from Glen Butterworth’s left-wing corner.

Minutes later Gott played it into Mulligan who saw his shot saved by Talbot.

Sunderland RCA then carved their first opportunity when Gordon tried to play it into Michael Charlton, but his cross was intercepted for a corner.

From the resulting corner, RCA took the lead when Callen rose highest to head past Dean.

Callen almost doubled his tally but he sent his shot narrowly wide after he had burst through.

Marske had a penalty appeal turned down on 40 minutes when Mulligan took a tumble under pressure from Gordon.

They were then denied an equaliser just before half-time when Jamie Owens had his shot from outside the box saved by Talbot.

RCA nearly increased their lead early in the second half but Dean was equal to Thomas Scott’s low shot.

Owens then had another effort saved when he was played in one-on-one.

The home side came close again when Luke Proctor’s corner was flicked into the path of Joe Melvin who had his shot saved from point-blank by Dean.

RCA then had a goal ruled out when Wayne Buchanan was adjudged to have fouled a defender when he headed into the net.

As the game wore on Marske became more determined and they almost levelled, but RCA were on hand to block shots from Owens and Butterworth.

Dan Riley was next to test RCA when he had his shot by Talbot after a driving run at the goal.

Mulligan was then played in by Riley but Talbot was out again to deny him.

RCA were still showing some threat going forward and they came close when Melvin fired after a one-two with Scott.

In the 77th minute, Marske missed their best chance to equalise when Mulligan struck the bar with a freekick from the edge of the box.

The Marske fans found their voice as they urged their team on and they almost delivered.

First, Reece Kelly sent in a shot that was blocked, then Mulligan headed wide from substitute Craig Ruddy’s cross.

RCA had a great chance to make it 2-0 in the 84th minute when they awarded a penalty for a foul on Clayton Davis.

Up stepped Noble who sent his penalty to the right but was denied by excellent diving save by Dean.

Marske had the ball in the net soon after but the referee had already blew for a foul on goalkeeper Talbot before Brunskill headed into the net.

With the win, RCA moved up to eighth in the league. Next up is a home game against third-placed Washington.
