Sunderland FoL Scholars 5-0 Northampton

Sunderland Scholars coach Jamie Chandler praised his “brilliant” side as they trashed Northampton Town 5-0.

The Monkwearmouth scholars maintained their unbeaten league run with goals from Arron Thompson, Max Nelson, Harry Johnson and Codie Howe.

Sunderland led 4-0 at half-time after a dominant first-half display from the league leaders.

Thompson, who had missed a penalty beforehand, gave his team a 25th-minute lead after reacting quickest to score after Alex Ramshaw’s strike hit the post.

The home side doubled their lead two minutes later as centre-back Howe rose highest from a corner to head into the bottom right corner.

Sunderland made it three in the 33rd minute, as another dangerous corner fell to Nelson, who bundled the ball home.

Johnson added the fourth before half-time as the winger hammered the ball into the net after Ramshaw’s low strike brushed the far post.

Thompson grabbed his second as he arrived at the back post and bravely stabbed the ball past the Northampton goalkeeper.

Sunderland’s sixth successive league win puts them four points clear at the top of the NYFL Midlands Division.

Chandler was very impressed with the emphatic victory.

He said: “The boys were terrific and showed great attitude.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game coming into it but the boys were absolutely brilliant and I am over the moon.

“We controlled the game very well and the intensity to go and win the ball back was different class.”

The Black Cats increased their goal tally to 33 after just six games and recorded their fifth clean sheet in a row.

Chandler added: “It shows the quality that we have in the squad.

“On their day, all the players are capable of finding the back of the net which is really pleasing.

“It is very difficult to pick a squad at the minute.

“All of them are playing out of their skin in training and matches.

“They are working hard to win the ball back and showing their quality going forward and I am delighted to be top of the league.”
