University of Sunderland’s cheerleaders missed out on taking the Varsity crown after losing out to Teesside Wildcats by 3.4 points.

Both teams produced fantastic routines that demonstrated both dance and acrobatic ability.

Routines were scored out of 80, with Stars scoring 71.9 and Wildcats carding 75.3. The home side snatched the win; only 3.4 points separated the two squads.

President of the Sunderland Stars Natalie Gray said: “Our performance at this year’s Tees Wear Varsity was amazing. Stars put out a great performance and their hard work showed.”

“As their president I couldn’t be happier with how the routine went. I am beyond proud of all of the girls and what made it better was the team spirit that followed after the performance knowing all the girls were on such a high regardless of the result.”

Gray added: “Our goal is always to do better next season and really take on feedback from the previous season. We now have our feedback and we know what we need to work on to hopefully beat Teesside next year.”

The cheerleading season is now finished and the Stars plan to reveal their new season committee members in the coming months.
