Sunderland’s rowers won a men’s and a women’s event on Saturday.

Sunderland finished first in both the men’s and women’s senior singles races at the South Hylton Long Distance Sculls on Saturday.

Nick McGurk posted the 22nd fastest time of the day, completing the 4,750m distance in 20:55.2. This was enough to see him top the men’s senior singles time sheet.

Sunderland’s success in the singles races may not have happened because, as the first boats came across the line to post their times, a motor boat had made its way onto the course almost causing an accident. It caused further issues when it continued down the course towards the boats that were coming up to the finish line.

The quads didn’t have as much luck in avoiding trouble with one of the Sunderland boats hitting a piece of driftwood. This didn’t stop them posting a very respectable time and placing 43rd out of the 86 boats that started the event.

After the event started over an hour late due to the tide, the Sunderland squad were able to remain focused and bring all five boats back posting competitive times including winning two categories.
