Luke Molyneux, Sunderland U23s goalscorer

Sunderland Under 23s exited the Premier League Cup on Friday night following their 1-1 draw at home to Hull City.

In a game of few chances, Luke Molyneux’s late strike cancelled out Keane Lewis-Potter’s 55th minute goal.

Barring an 11 goal swing with Brighton & Hove Albion, Sunderland went into this game expecting it to be their last, and it was also guaranteed to be Hull’s last game in the competition.

Defeats at both Brighton & Hove Albion and Exeter City had left the young Black Cats all but out of the competition.

Following a very quiet start, Sunderland’s Jake Hackett registered the first shot with a quarter of an hour played. When Hackett took aim from 20 yards, Will Mannion fumbled his effort, but the Hull City ‘keeper was able to recollect.

Hull City looked comfortable in possession, but certainly didn’t look like testing Sunderland.

As the quiet half continued, Connor Shields and Elliot Embleton both fired harmlessly wide for the hosts.

Hull registered shots through Deon Moore and Lewis-Potter, but just like Sunderland, they were never going to trouble the goalkeeper.

Following the break, Max Sheaf hit a speculative effort for the visitors but could only curl wide from 25 yards.

In the 55th minute, Hull broke the deadlock. Sheaf whipped a wide free-kick into the penalty area which was totally missed by Max Stryjek. It dropped to Lewis-Potter at the back post and he had the simplest of finishes to put the visitors ahead.

Halfway through the second half, a deep Hull City free-kick found the unmarked Moore, but a fine save from Stryjek prevented the former Peterborough United man.

Benji Kimpioka headed well over for the hosts in the 81st minute, before the young Black Cats pulled level three minutes later. Embleton played Molyneux in and the substitute made no mistake in finding the far corner.

There was a chance for Sunderland to win it as Embleton teed up Molyneux once again in injury time, but a fine save from Mannion ensured the points were shared.
