Sunderland University have announced the nominees for the annual Sports Ball awards ceremony taking place on 17th May.

The event, held at the Stadium of Light, celebrates all achievements of the university sports teams with a formal dinner and prize ceremony.

Most Improved Team

1) Cheerleading

All three cheerleading teams placed higher in the University National Championships than last year, while also giving away zero deductions in their routines.

2) Women’s Football

After losing just one game all season, the Women’s football team comfortably own their league and have been promoted into the Northern 2B League.

3) Men’s Futsal

Men’s Futsal won the Northern Conference Cup with a 5-3 win over Liverpool in front of a big home crowd

4) Men’s Hockey

After winning their varsity games against York St John and Teesside, the Men’s Hockey team had a much improved season compared to last year, winning more games then they lost.

5) Table Tennis

The table tennis team were able to hold their own in their new league after being promoted last season

Securing a draw against a higher ranked York St John side in the Clash of the Ministers Varsity

3) Men’s Hockey

Beating York St John, who are in the league above Sunderland, in the Varsity match

Winning against York St John University for the first time in five years

Team of the Year

1) Volleyball

The team made it to the BUCS Northern Conference Cup Final narrowly losing in the fifth set to York

2) Futsal

3) Women’s Football

4) American Football

Made the play-off match, losing by just one point to a strong De Montford University
