Waleed Alnoumas in action at BUCS Nationals in Sheffield


Team Sunderland’s Waleed Alnoumas is jetting off to the European Universities Combat Championships in Zagreb this week.

The 20-year-old who is currently undertaking a foundation in engineering at the University of Sunderland will be competing in the Men’s Senior Kumite -75kg category for karate.

Alnoumas said: “I’m so excited for this competition this is a new experience for me to compete in Europe and it brings new goals. Competing before in Asia and now coming to Europe it is a completely different style.

“I’ve had a big training camp in the two weeks before this competition, my programme has been planned around training with my national team back in Kuwait, training three times a day.”

Alnoumas, who is originally from Kuwait, is part of Team Sunderland’s Elite Athlete Scheme and recently won silver at BUCS Nationals in Sheffield.

He said: “I’m very grateful and happy for the support from the university, it means a lot of to me that the university supports an international student and I hope to repay their faith in me.”

“It’s great that the Elite Athlete Scheme supports athletes achieve their aims in sport.”

Alnoumas trains in the CitySpace facility with University coaches John and Holly Bruce and was effusive about the impact they have had.

He said: “They’re the best coaches I’ve ever had.”
