Sunderland Men’s Futsal 1st’s edged closer towards the top of the BUCS league as victory over York 2nd’s and a walkover versus Bradford earned them six points.

Victory over York earned Sunderland there fifth successive league victory as they breezed past their opponents 11-4 with ease.

Sunderland had to dig in to break the deadlock but after the opening goal the lead never looked in doubt as they broke a stubborn York defence.

However, it was not all plain sailing as Sunderland Men’s Futsal 2nd’s were beaten against much tougher opposition in Teesside and York St John’s.

Teesside were the first to beat the seconds as a 9-0 defeat made sure they were going to have a torrid time in the third round-robin of the season.

Sunderland had many positives to take out the game as the defeat was not as damaging as the last time Teesside were up against Sunderland 2nd’s as the visitors breezed past them 18-1.

Seconds player Nathan Jefferson commented: “Even though we lost you can see the improvement throughout the seconds and Teesside are a top team who are right up there at the top of the table”.

York St John’s were next up for the hosts who fought bravely against their rivals as they were defeated 7-3.

Sunderland showed their steel when Kane France was unnecessarily pushed onto the post and tempers from both sides flared and play was stopped.

After the stoppage Sunderland 2nd’s stuck to their task however did not have enough to stop York St John’s in a very tightly fought game.

Next up for both teams is another round-robin tournament next weekend at York St John’s as Sunderland 1st’s play Bradford and Teesside whilst the 2nd’s play York 2nd’s and another game against the hosts.
