Jarrow Roofing were relegated from Northern League Division One on Thursday night following a 4-1 defeat away to Sunderland RCA.

The win means Sunderland RCA cement a top four finish, with a third place finish still a real possibility.

Both sides finished the game with 10 men. Goalkeeper Dan Regan was sent off for Jarrow Roofing in the first half, before Sunderland RCA’s Nathan O’Neill was sent off late on.

Liam Anderson fired Roofing into a 25th minute lead, but RCA responded in the second half through superb strikes from both Stephen Callen and Dylan Elliott.

Michael Charlton made it 3-1 to RCA with five minutes to play, and Callen’s second of the evening in added time rounded off a very successful season for RCA.

Roofing started the brighter and from the second a back-to-back early corners, Anthony Myers headed harmlessly over.

With exactly three minutes on the clock, Roofing’s John Campbell beat the offside trap to be in on goal. The former Oxford United man picked his spot, but he dragged his effort narrowly wide of the far corner.

RCA created little in the opening exchanges, and it was looking as though three games in four days was taking its toll on the hosts.

In the 17th minute, O’Neill’s pull back gave Luke Page a chance, but a crucial last-ditch challenge prevented the former Easington Colliery man.

Four minutes later, an Elliott corner found Page at the near post. He sliced his effort, but it caused some trouble for Regan who eventually had to push the looping ball behind for a corner.

Just as RCA were building a way back into the game, Jarrow Roofing broke the deadlock. Paul Gardiner’s ball over the top was flicked on by Campbell to play Anderson in. He charged down on goal before slotting home to give the Roofers a chance of survival.

Brad Varga fired over as Roofing looked to double their lead, before O’Neill headed over for the hosts.

Page’s 32nd minute volley forced a save from Roofing’s Regan, before Callen fired wide after cutting in from the wing.

A route one goalkick gave Callen another chance 10 minutes before the break, but his effort could only find the side-netting.

In the 36th minute, Roofing were reduced to 10 men. Page was played in and he took the ball round Regan. In the process, Regan took Page out and gave the referee no option but it give him his marching orders.

Despite being ahead, it was always going to be difficult for Roofing now down to 10 men.

Roofing’s Gardiner and David Palmer both forced saves from Scott Pocklington as half-time approached, but neither could double their side’s lead.

Following the break, RCA came out looking a recharged outfit. Callen went close within the opening three minutes, before a good save from Shaun Newbrook prevented Page two minutes later.

Callen then sent a difficult looping effort over the crossbar.

In the 63rd minute, the hosts pulled level with a superb strike. Reece Noble’s deep cross found Callen at the back post and his first time volley picked out the bottom corner.

Only two minutes later, with an equally superb strike, Elliott put RCA ahead. Collecting possession on the edge of the penalty area, the former Hartlepool United man curled a pinpoint effort into the far top corner giving Newbrook no chance.

Page and Callen both had efforts blocked as the game entered its final 20 minutes, before Charlton fired into the side-netting following good work from Elliott.

With 10 minutes to play, Sunderland RCA were reduced to 10 men. In a rather harsh looking decision, O’Neill was adjudged to have elbowed a Jarrow Roofing man.

However, the red card didn’t affect Sunderland RCA as they doubled their lead in the 85th minute. Elliott played a clever ball through to Charlton. He cut in to beat his marker before a composed finish all but relegated Roofing.

In the second minute of added time, RCA added a fourth. Callen tried his luck from long-range and it looked a comfortable take for Newbrook. However, it somehow managed to bounce past Newbrook and into the net.

The result means Roofing will finish third bottom, while RCA will be hoping Shildon fail to beat Ryhope CW to finish third on Saturday.
