Sunderland 3rd team coach Daniel Kendal was delighted with his side’s performance despite their narrow 2-1 defeat to York St John 6ths and feels ‘luck’ is just not on his side.

“A couple of mistakes cost us” said Kendal. “I thought for 90 minutes, the lads were brilliant. They gave everything, from start to finish. For the last 20 minutes, they were clinging on and I think we just needed that one bit of luck.

“Referees are human, of course it’s frustrating but you’ve got to carry on until the whistle blows. A couple of players just seemed to switch off and lose concentration.”

He continued, “I thought right-back Jake McGee was absolutely solid, put in some great tackles in and at one point made a goal saving challenge.

“He was very confident on the ball and I also thought the goalkeeper (Tristan Clausen) was fantastic, he pulled off some really good saves.

“If we play like we did today, there’s no reason why we can’t win our next game.”

Sunderland 3rds are next in action at home to Leeds Arts 1sts on February 21 in their penultimate game of the season.
