Sunderland Mens 2nd’s BUCS league fight for survival was given a boost as they gained a valuable point from promotion-chasers Sheffield Hallam in a 2-2 draw.

The Wearsiders quickly pegged Sheffield back after their first-half opener, but left the second equaliser until the last 10 minutes.

Sunderland headed into the game as underdogs, sitting above the drop zone on goal-difference whilst Sheffield were chasing top spot.

It was the favourites who took the lead despite a string of great saves from Sunderland’s ‘keeper as the Yorkshire outfit finally bundled it in from six yards out.

The Wearsiders immediately pegged them back though after a cutback to the edge of the box was stroked home by an onrushing midfielder.

Sheffield took the lead early in the second half and protected it with ease as Sunderland struggled to threaten from open play.

Much to their manager’s delight, Sunderland snuck an equaliser with 10 minutes to go (See the video below for some Klopp-esque scenes)

As the clock wound down, both sides had chances to bag all 3 points. Sunderland came close with another set piece, and Sheffield’s number 7 missed a sitter after rounding the keeper:

Sunderland’s 2nds created a 1-point gap between themselves and the drop zone, and will need a similar performance next week if they are to beat league leaders Hull 4ths.
