After suffering the ignominy of relegation last season, the 2nds find themselves in an all too familiar position again this season with 4 games to go.

Coach Mo Hmida’s side sits 5th in the table, one point off the relegation place in the BUCS Northern 6B which is currently occupied by Sunderland 3rds.

The sides face each other on the final day of the season in what could be a relegation decider. 2nds player Dante West spoke about the situation the sides find themselves in: “As a 2nd team player I want the 2nds to stay up.

“If the 3rds have to take the fall it’d be a shame but at least we’ll have bragging rights in training. The rivalry between the 2nds and 3rds has been good for us.”

Despite an underwhelming league campaign thus far, the 2nds did manage to win a few cup games, before being hammered 10-1 by the University of Leeds.

Defending has been an issue for Hmida’s side this season as they have shipped 31 goals in 9 games across all competitions, keeping just one clean sheet in that time.

“We don’t really have a plan to stay up’ added West. ‘We’re playing good football but have just been unfortunate with not getting the results we feel we deserved.

“I’m certain we have it in us to comfortably stay up if we carry on the way we are.”

With four games to go and a potentially humiliating relegation at the hands of the University’s supposedly lesser side, the 2nds will have to perform as well as West feels they can.
