Sunderland’s defeat to York St John at the weekend meant the home side clinched the title as the season came to a defining end.

The hosts edged the game as they came out victorious to beat Sunderland 7-4.

The victory for York St John meant Teesside missed out on the title, if Sunderland had drawn or defeated the host’s Teesside would have only been a victory away from winning the league and would have been lifting the title had they beaten York.

However, it was not meant to be as York St John got the better of the Wearsider’s and Teesside could not do anything to dislodge the eventual champions.

Earlier in the day, Sunderland Men’s Futsal 2nd’s were up against York and were unfortunate to lose the match as York won 2-1.

On another day Sunderland could have beaten York as they had two goals controversially disallowed which would have changed the outcome of the match.

Seconds player Nathan Jefferson commented: “We were unlucky today and to end the season like that hurts but I’m already looking forward to next season.”

Next up for both Sunderland Futsal team’s is a huge match in the upcoming Tees-Wear Varsity in March where Teesside will visit Sunderland as the rivalry heats up once again.
