Washington’s first choice full-back Anthony Callaghan has joined league rivals South Shields.

Callaghan departs before the club’s Ebac Northern League clash against Bishop Auckland on Wednesday evening.

The attacking full back reflected on his time at Washington and paid tribute to their start to last season: “We had a good start to the season and went quite far in a few cups but that was probably our downfall.

“We didn’t really have a big enough squad and our season ended up petering out towards the end of the season.

“We didn’t have the best start to the season but it’s time for me to move on and I’m looking forward to getting started with Shields.”

The former Sunderland trainee leaves Washington fourth bottom of the Northern League to join second placed Mariners who are early favourites for the title.

“There’s a lot of competition for places at Shields,” he said. “But I’m prepared to get my head down, work hard and get into the side and keep my place.

“The style of play suits me perfectly, playing out from the back; I love bombing forward and I’m looking forward to getting to know the lads.”
