York St John’s 4th team inflicted a fifth consecutive league defeat on Sunderland Men’s 3rds after a comprehensive 5-2 win at Silksworth Sports Complex.

The visitors struck four times in the first half and scored a sensational fifth late on, as goals from Stuart Bushby and Jack Mensforth could not prevent Sunderland from falling to their fifth defeat of the season and remain without a single point in the British Universities and Colleges Sport Northern 6B league table.

Within the opening 7 minutes of the match, Sunderland goalkeeper Alistair Scott was called into action and made a fine stop at his near post to keep the scores level.

Though on the 16th minute, the deadlock was broken when York St John went 1-0 up after a thumping left footed strike into the bottom right corner.

Just 9 minutes later, York doubled their lead from 25 yards out with a splendid free-kick over the wall, with Sunderland goalkeeper Scott rooted to the spot.

Shortly after, York St John made it 3-0 after more sloppy defending from Sunderland, as the striker beat the offside trap and sent a curling right footed effort into the back of the net with 28 minutes played.

However, the game was far from over as Sunderland got one back just 10 minutes later when James Mole delivered a great cross in towards Bushby who tapped it in from close range bringing the score back to 3-1.

Though, on the 44th minute, York St John grabbed a fourth after Scott spilled it in his own area when failing to deal with a cross, allowing a simple tap in right before half-time.

After a quiet start to the second half, the game finally got going again with some half chances for Sunderland, firstly Jordan Topping went close when he saw his chipped effort pushed over the crossbar and then from the resulting corner, Joe Nixon diverted his header just wide past the post.

And as we entered the final 15 minutes, Sunderland  coach Dan Kendall decided to make a couple of changes bringing off Keeran Harrison and Chris Suddas and replacing them with Akshay Lal and Ahmed Abdelraouf in desperate need of trying to get back into the game.

With just 10 minutes remaining, York St John put the final nail in the coffin making it 5-1 with a spectacular right-footed strike into the top left hand corner to guarantee the visitors all three points.

Sunderland however, did manage to pull another one back on the 85th minute through Mensforth’s free-kick, though not long after, the referee brought the game to a close meaning Sunderland are still without a point and currently sitting rock bottom of the Northern 6B league table.
