Sunderland entered the match as the last unbeaten team at home in the Premier League this season, having gone 12 matches without defeat.
The Reds found it difficult to break down Sunderland’s solid defence, with Florian Wirtz coming closest to opening the scoring for Liverpool.
Around the half-hour mark, the German’s right-footed shot from outside the box was well saved by Roefs, who parried it out for a corner.
Shortly after, Wirtz hit the post with a left-footed effort inside the area and then saw a header saved by Roefs.
Liverpool secured an important victory in the 61st minute when van Dijk headed in Mo Salah’s corner, with Habib Diarra inadvertently redirecting the powerful header into his own net,
The visitors’ night night was slightly overshadowed by a concerning injury to Wataru Endo, who filled in at right-back due to Dominik Szoboszlai’s suspension and was making his first league start of the season.
Victory for Liverpool – only their second in the league in 2026 – helped them cut the gap to fifth-placed Chelsea to two points, while Sunderland sit 11th.
