Match Report: Sunderland U21 4-2 Blackburn U21
Sunderland Under-21s thrashed Blackburn Rovers to reach the Premier League Cup Final.
Graeme Murty’s side managed to seal the win in a six-goal match, despite Blackburn having taken the lead early on in the game.
Both teams had their eyes on the final from the start, with Blackburn’s Joseph Boggan giving his team the lead with a ball into the bottom right corner in the third minute.
Jack Whittaker made the most of a promising opportunity when the ball was passed to him and he equalised only 10 minutes later.
In the 20th minute, Milan Aleksić crossed the ball to Jaydon Jones, who volleyed the ball past the keeper to give Sunderland the lead.
Blackburn hadn’t finished yet though, with Brandon Powell scoring after his teammates struggled to get the ball past the defenders to put them level.
The hosts retook the lead, when Aleksić’s missed chance dropped to Harrison Jones to chip the ball into the left corner of the net.
During the second half, both teams were still in the game, with Blackburn trying to get another goal early on as Isaac Dunn delivered a through ball to Tyler Mansbridge, but his shot went out of play.
However, despite both teams putting their all into the last half, the final was secured by Sunderland’s Whittaker, who tapped the ball into the net from a cross by Tom Proctor in the 74th minute.
Sunderland will play Burnley in the Premier League Cup Final.
