Dunston boxer impresses on homeshow
14:46 Good afternoon and welcome to the Dunston ABC home show here at the Federation brewery where in the 7th bout of the show we have Northstar’s Layla Straughan facing off with Ruby Cuthbertson.
Straughan comes into this fight after a year and two months away from the sport with her last win being for the youth cadet national under 48kg final, where she took home the medal taking her record to 16-3
In the other corner Cuthbertson comes in boasting a record of 13-5 and recently coming off of a loss against Ruby White in the youth national championships.
14:49 Both women walk to the ring looking confident and rightly so with them both boasting winning records and this not being their first time under the lights.
14:51 DING DING DING the first bell sounds and both boxers emerge slowly and cautiously from their corners wanting to take a good luck at each other before committing to any shots.
14:51 Both fighters are remaining wary of one another appearing to be choosing to counter punch instead of forcing a fight. Not a lot of action so far here in round one.
14:51 Asking Dazz Straughan, one of the boxer’s dad, what he thought so far he had this to say “I have no doubt that Layla’s gonna be able to pull through, she’s just working off that last bit of ring rust”.
14:53 After a pretty slow first round it would be hard to say who won that round but hopefully things pick up after the first break.
14:54 The second round kicks off with some much needed action from Cuthbertson who catches Straughan with her left hand down and connects with a stiff jab followed up by a thudding left hook.
14:54 Straughan attempts to retaliate straight away with a right hook but is rolled under by the Dunston boxer and Cuthbertson returns with a right uppercut snapping Straughan’s head back and is given a standing eight count.
14:55 Cuthbertson has gotten a lot more aggressive in forcing a fight with Straughan who is now attempting to keep her off with a series of jabs and backhands but with little success.
14:55 Straughan lands a quick parry followed up with a backhand which appears to have dazed Cuthbertson and allows for the Northstar boxer to follow up with a double jab to create some much needed space.
14:55 In the dying moments of the second round Cuthbertson feints a jab to the body which makes Straughan drop her hands and lets the Dunston boxer land a clean lopping righthand over the top rocking Straughan.
14:56 The final break in this fight has begun and it becomes clear that this fight may be pulling away from Straughan. As the break comes to the end Cuthbertson is already standing up ready while Straughan is still sitting, mindgames in full effect.
14:57 With the final round starting Cuthbertson charges out of her corner nearing a sprint while Straughan tucks up and prepares for the round ahead.
14:57 Straughan manages to avoid a lot of shots from Cuthbertson by staying quick on her feet but the Dunston boxer manages to catch Straughan with a check hook almost tripping the Northstar boxer leaving her open to a combination which leaves Straughan looking like she’s just been mugged.
14:58 Cuthbertson has been looking her best this round but unfortunately commits to a lazy jab and Straughan takes her chance and slips to the inside nailing Cuthbertson with a left uppercut mirroring the shot she got a standing count with. However, not reaping the same result as the bout continues on.
14:58 As the final few moments of the fight arrive Straughan has a second wind and manages to land a clean combination to the chin of Cuthbertson but it may be too little too late.
14:59 DING DING DING as the final bell sounds both boxers return to their corners Cuthbertson looking a lot more confident in her performance.
15:00 Both boxers gather in the middle of the ring and the judges score the fight a unanimous decision to the red corner Ruby Cuthbertson, bringing her record to 14-5.

I managed to find Dazz Straughan again on what he thought of the fight and he had this to say “No yeah it was obviously disappointing Layla lost today fair and square and that other lass was very good so well done to her but we’ll move on and come back better”.
Leyton Pennock came in support of Straughan tonight and he told me that he thought Straughan should have given Cuthbertson a count in that last round “Layla one hundred percent should have given that Ruby a count like, head snapped back and everything. But no Layla will have some ring rust still she’s been out ages, but no we’re very proud regardless”.
Thank you for turning in to this live text coverage and I hope to see you at the next one but goodbye for now!
