Team Sunderland’s week 17 round-up

For the first time this season, there was  silverware earned for one of Team Sunderland’s teams in an otherwise frustrating week for the other sides in action.

Team Sunderland Men’s Rugby Union celebrate with their gold medals.

The Men’s Rugby Union 1sts clinched the BUCS Northern Conference Shield with a late second-half comeback and outstanding extra-time performance helping the side to a 36-22 victory over Northumbria’s 4ths at Maiden Castle, Durham.

Two tries from Ethan Sutcliffe pushed the side to the extra-time win and trophy – the first for Team Sunderland in their 2023-24 season.

For the Women’s Rugby 1sts, they made it four wins from four with a massive 59-10 point win away at Hull’s 1sts.

As the end of the season comes into view, it was a disappointing week for the three football teams involved in matches over Wednesday.

The Men’s 2nds extended their 2024 unbeaten run to four games, as they took a point away from York St. John’s 5ths in a 3-3 draw.

Last week, the Men’s 1sts’ five-match unbeaten run came to an end with a defeat to Leeds’ 3rds, but it was two defeats on the bounce, as they were comfortably defeated 7-0 away to York’s 1sts.

Meanwhile, the 6ths were also put to the sword in an 8-0 defeat to Northumbria’s 7ths (i2i).

For the Men’s Badminton 1sts, they extended their own winning run, though, to five games with another 7-1 victory; this time away to Leeds’ 3rds on Wednesday.

However, it was defeat for the Men’s Basketball 1sts, as they lost 73-85 to Leeds’ 1sts at The Edge in Leeds on Wednesday night, whilst the Men’s Fencing 1sts lost 98-135 to Sheffield’s 2nds on home turf.
