Strikers that Sunderland could sign this summer
As the Championship season is approaching its end Sunderland have had an underwhelming season compared to the standards, they set last season, a season in which they managed to reach the play off places in their first season back in the Championship and only narrowly lost to Luton who ended up getting promoted.
Certain sections of the Sunderland fan base would argue that the managerial changes haven’t helped their season. However, an issue that has clearly been evident from the start of the season is the fact that Sunderland, despite their attempts, have not replaced Ross Stewart adequately.
Mason Burstow, Nazariy Rusyn, Eliezer Mayenda and Luis Semedo have struggled to impress at the Stadium of Light this season.
These four strikers that Sunderland brought into the club during the summer have all had a combined 72 league appearances between them and they have only managed three goals between them and two of them have come from Rusyn.
Here are five strikers the Black Cats could sign that could help improve their goalscoring issues.
- Divin Mubama
The 19-year-old will be available on a free transfer as his contract looks set to expire at West Ham. It seems as if Sunderland are the frontrunners to secure the signature of the highly regarded teenager. Having only managed five league appearances this season Mubama will be looking for a club in which he can be given more game time.
2. Musa Drammeh
Another player who looks set to leave on a free transfer. Drammeh has been linked with moves to Birmingham, Cardiff and Sunderland. Drammeh has helped Sevilla Atletico get promoted into the third tier of Spanish football having notched 10 goals and three assists in 30 games.
3. Jay Stansfield
An option that fits the model of Sunderland, the 21-year-old had a good personal season for Birmingham this season whilst on loan from Fulham. Although the Blues suffered relegation to the third tier for the first time since 1995, Stansfield scored 12 and assisted twice in 43 appearances this season. With Fulham having three strikers in front of Stansfield, the 21-year-old will be looking for a club in which he can play regularly for.
4. Ryan Hardie
A more experienced option, the 27-year-old had a good season for Plymouth Argyle, who managed to keep themselves in the division after getting promoted from League One in the previous season. Hardie has contributed to Plymouth’s fight against relegation this season by scoring a respectable 12 goals and getting four assists in 40 league games this season. With Hardie proving himself in his first ever season in the Championship would Sunderland try to add a bit of experience to a squad which is already the youngest in the EFL.
5. Macaulay Langstaff
Langstaff has been a revelation for Notts County in the last two seasons. In the last two seasons, he has 69 goals and 10 assists in 91 games. This fantastic run of goalscoring form has secured him the golden boot in the last two seasons in the National League and League Two respectively. Although there is an argument to be made that the standard between League Two and the Championship, but with Notts County only managing a 14th place finish you would think Langstaff would want to test himself in a better league.
