Gateshead’s playoff dreams shattered after a 0-0 draw to Southend

Gateshead FC 0 – 0 Southend United

Southend United secured the final playoff position with a goalless away day at Gateshead.

After their losses to Hartlepool United and York City, the Northeast side needed to secure this win to ensure they would make it to the playoffs. Southend were sitting in sixth position and only needed a draw or a win to secure their spot.

The first half was monotonous for both sides, with neither having any shots on target.

In the 32nd minute, George Shelvey cleared the ball away from the Heed goal after a Southend corner had been headed towards the net.

In the second half, the Heed picked up the pace and asserted dominance.

In the 60th minute, Shelvey once again palmed away a powerful strike from a Southend free kick.

Heed had their first shot on target from Tyrelle Newton let the ball fly from 20 yards, yet it was held by Nick Hayes at the first attempt.

Liam Humbles had the Shrimpers defenders lurking behind when making attempts to break the scoreline.

The Heed had several chances when corners were given, but nothing was converted.

In the eight minutes of added extra time, Gateshead were fighting for that one goal to give them a glimmer of Wembley, but it wasn’t enough.
