Team Sunderland Rowers Medal at Scottish Champs

Team Sunderland Rowing competed in the Scottish Rowing Championships this weekend at Strathclyde Park.

Stand out performers were the Men’s Coxed Quad who won gold and Lewis Allison and Rob Harding who picked up a silver medal in the Men’s Doubles.

The team travelled up ready to compete in one of the strongest events in the UK over two days of competition.

On Saturday morning members competed in the Men’s Singles with Lewis unlucky to miss out on the final after being drawn in the toughest heat.

The club then competed in the Women’s Coxed Quad which proved to be a valuable learning experience for both the Quad and the cox.

Later that day Amy Agnew and Eden Weeks successfully qualified for the final of the Women’s Double where they would finish 6th, an outstanding achievement.

Onto Sunday and Amy and Eden were again in action, this time in the Women’s Singles. Despite the challenging conditions both performed well with Amy narrowly missing out on a spot in the final and Eden enjoying her first time racing in a single.

Next up was the Men’s Coxed Quad with Lewis, Rob, Benji Bleazard and Tom Strong coxed by Eden Weeks. The race was run as a straight final and Team Sunderland emerged as winners.

The final event of the weekend was the men’s doubles. Tom and Benji finished 4th in their heat and narrowly missed out on a place in the final. Before Lewis and Rob finished 2nd in their heat, qualifying for the final, where we went on to win silver.

Rob Harding said of the event: “Overall everyone is very pleased with how the weekend went. There were some excellent performances, valuable lessons learned, and we all had a great time representing the university.”
