Heaton Stannington triumph over Morpeth for first Senior Cup.

Dan Groves scored the winning penalty as Heaton Stannington won 5-4 on penalties to beat Morpeth Town in the Northumberland FA Senior Cup Final.

The Stan came into the game off the back of a win against North Ferriby, which cemented them a 12th place finish in their division. Meanwhile, Morpeth Town’s last match ended in a 1-1 draw against Warrington Rylands.

The Stan made a positive start to the game. Leighton Hopper went down the left-hand side and pulled it back for Richard Slaughter, who missed from 30 yards out.

12 minutes later, Morpeth had their first chance of the game as Josh King tried scoring from close range but blazed it over.

Pressure was mounting on the Stan as they were struggling to cope with Morpeth’s attack and Dan Stephenson tried scoring from 30 yards out, as the ball hit the crossbar.

As half-time neared, the Stan once again came close to goal as Konner Lamb glided past the defence, got the shot away but placed it straight at Dan Langley.

Brass was called into action three minutes as Rhys Evans was through on the right, but the shot was too low as Brass stopped the ball with his feet.

There were calls for a red card after Lamb was fouled on the edge of the penalty box by Josh Robson who picked up a yellow card to the dismay of Stan supporters.

The second half saw no shortage of action. Langley had to make a double save as Lamb and Andrew Burn tried for an opening goal.

Shortly after, the Stan had to clear their defensive lines as Nico Bollado shot across goal. Brass made a save, but a rebound fell for Leon-Gibson Booth. The Stan defence cleared the ball before he could get a shot away.

With neither side able to find a winner within the 90 minutes, the game headed straight for penalties.

Despite Connor Walker’s miss, Brass was able to keep out two Morpeth penalties, and Dan Groves was next up to take them
