Newcastle United W 2-2 Bristol City W: Newcastle United show fight to earn back point at Gateshead International Stadium

Newcastle United women fought back late to earn a 2-2 draw with Bristol City.

Oona Sevenius drew first blood before half time, but Bristol took the lead with two goals from Rio Hardy. A late score from Lois Joel bagged the Magpies a point at full time.

Newcastle made four changes in their 2-2 draw away to Crystal Palace last weekend as Molly Pike, Joel, Sevenius and Emily Murphy came in for Freya Gregory, Shaina Hayles, Beth Lumsden and Jasmine McQuade. Bristol City were unchanged following their 2-1 victory against Durham Women FC.

It took the lasses 46 minutes to score the first goal of the game, after Pike and Jordan Nobbs combined to find Morgan Gautrat on the left flank, brilliant footwork by Gautrat opened space for her to force a stop from the keeper. However her second attempt was buried into the top corner within the six yard box to take her side into half time into the lead.

It only took Bristol City two minutes to find the equaliser in the second half. A great bit of passing play by the Robins lead to the ball falling for Mari Ward on the edge of the six yard box whose shot was tapped in by Hardy in the six yard box to draw Bristol City level.

Bristol City would then intercept a ball from Newcastle United in the centre circle, Hardy stormed forward at pace with three other Bristol City players, Hardy unleashed Vera Jones on the right side who used her feet well and played the ball back to Rio Hardy in the box who capitalised from close.

Entering into the final few moments of the game Beth Lumsden ran down the right flank and delivered a cross which was cleared away by Sillie Struck, but Joel was at the end of it whose effort from range nestled into the net to make it level.

Becky Langley’s Magpies claimed a point at full time, where they now sit 9th in WSL2. Her side now prepare to face Manchester City in the League Cup at Gateshead International Stadium next Sunday.
