Wolves set to appoint Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards as new head coach

Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to announce the appointment of Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards on a three-and-a-half year deal.

The appointment of Edwards at Wolves is set to make the Teesside club around £3-4m in compensation, according to reports.

Edwards has only been in the Middlesbrough dugout since the summer, however his impact on the squad has been clear, with the side sitting second in the Sky Bet Championship – the club’s best start to a season for 31 years.

The Boro boss had seemed to distance himself prior to the Leicester City game last week, in which he said: “My full focus is on this job here.

“I was told by my daughter…so that probably tells you where I stand.”

Yet, talks have progressed, and the club announced on Saturday that permission had been granted for Edwards to speak to Wolves; leaving assistant manager Adi Viveash taking Saturday’s Championship clash with Birmingham City.

Wolves have been without a manager since Vitor Pereira was sacked, following an poor start to the Premier League season, which has seen them sit at the foot of the table with only two points after 11 games.

Last weekend’s defeat to Fulham has saw the Midlands club was Pereira’s final game in charge; however, the move came as somewhat of a surprise after the coach signed a new long-term contract at Wolves in September.

After talks with Gary O’Neil broke down, Wolves eyed Edwards as his replacement, and with talks intensifying over the weekend, the Boro boss is set to depart Teesside and head to Molineux.

Edwards was once on the books of Wolves – making over 100 appearances for them as a player, and later going on to coach at Wolves and briefly become interim manager in 2016.

Also, he had a short stint as Watford manager, but was sacked after 11 games, and Luton manager, where he led the club to the Premier League for the first time ever.

Edwards’ Luton were relegated back down to the Championship the following season and the 42-year-old left in the 2024-25 season, where Luton were relegated again to League One.
