Newcastle United Women 1-3 Everton Women: Match report

Newcastle United suffer 3-1 defeat and Subway League Cup exit at Gateshead International Stadium in Claire Ditchburn’s final game as interim boss.

The lasses suffered defeat to Everton via a free kick goal by Yuka Momiki, second half goals from Katja Snoeijs and Toni Payne confirmed defeat for Claire Ditchburn’s side.

Newcastle United made seven changes from their derby win last weekend with Claudia Moan , Jemma Purfield, Freya Greggory, Malgorzata Grec, Jasmine McQuade, Emily Murphy, Lia Cataldo all coming in for Anna Tamminen (GK), Demi Stokes, Aoife Mannion, Charlotte Wardlaw, Elysia Boddy, Molly Pike, Oona Sevenius.

Everton saw more of the ball in the opening 20 minutes and put a few balls into the box to test the Magpies defence but Newcastle defended them well. Everton took the first half lead through a free kick scored by Yuba Momiki which was placed to her right.

Everton went into the interval a goal up, despite the lack of chances were created in the opening 45.

Both sides made a half time change, Aiofe Mannion came on for Captain Deanna Cooper for the Magpies, Katja Snoeijs replaced Kelly Gago for the Toffees.

It took Everton five minutes into the second half for Everton to have a decent chance at doubling the lead, Toni Payne was denied by Moan before the follow up by Yuka Momiki was blocked by Mannion.

Newcastle had their first chance of the game 56 minutes in as Jordan Nobbs drilled a shot at goal from outside the box which was parried out by Courtney Brosnan.

Everton made it two at the Gateshead International Stadium, as substitute Katja Snoejis slotted it in to give the WSL side a comfortable lead with 18 minutes to go.

The Toffees made it 3-0 one minute after scoring a second, with Toni Payne placing it in for the Blues.

Newcastle United pushed forward, forced the toffees’ goalkeeper makes a great save to get Newcastle a corner kick, which was delivered by Jordan Nobbs and headed in by Beth Lumsden to get her side a goal back to make make it 3-1.

Newcastle United continued to push, Lumsden had a one on one with Brosman but the Everton goalkeeper made the save 92′ minutes in.

The Magpies head into the international break after defeat but new manager, Tanya Oxtoby will be eager to get her side ready for the WSL2 game at home to Southampton in two weeks time in their push for promotion to the WSL.
