Match Report: Heaton Stannington 3-0 Newcastle United U21

Heaton Stannington 3 Newcastle United U21 0

Heaton Stannington are through to their first Northumberland Senior Cup Final as they defeated ten-men Newcastle United U21 3-0.

The home side went ahead early in the first-half through Leighton Hopper before Newcastle midfielder Scott Bailey was sent off before the break. Second-half goals from Bailey Adamson and Alfie Marriott rounded off a perfect night for The Stan.

They came into this game looking to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat to Grimsby Borough, whereas The Young Magpies beat Middlesbrough U21 2-0 in their previous outing.

The Stan pressured the visitors straight from kick-off as an early set piece for the home side saw Daniel Capewell head the ball narrowly wide of goal. Three minutes later, Hopper tried one from a corner but nipped the ball over.

The pressure paid off in the 15th minute, as a delivery into the box found Adamson whose shot hit the post and fell into the path of Hopper, who fired home from close range to give The Stan a deserved lead.

It got worse for the Young Mags before half-time as they were reduced to ten men. Bailey was shown a second yellow card , giving his side an uphill battle after break.

15 minutes into the second-half, The Stan doubled their lead as Adamson’s low effort slotted past goalkeeper Aiden Harris into the bottom left-hand corner.

They nearly added a third as Daniel Stephenson’s cross found Konner Lamb who headed it towards goal, but Harris saved from close range.

However The Stan eventually made it three as Marriott latched on onto Stephenson’s lofted free-kick in the penalty area and rifled the ball into the roof of the net.

The result meant Newcastle United U21 miss out on consecutive finals, but Heaton Stannington will compete in their first Senior Cup Final.
