Match Report: Newcastle Benfield 0-4 Easington Colliery
Newcastle Benfield rounded off their home league campaign with a sub-par showing, losing four-nil to Easington Colliery at the MKM Stadium.
A double from Craig Hennis in the first half put the away side in the driving seat going into the break, before goals from Brad Hird and Chris Trewick after the break sealed the win.
The first 15 minutes of the game were quiet, with neither side creating anything of substance.
Easington took the lead on the 33rd minute, when Dylan Elliott curled a free-kick into the box, which was headed home by Hennis past Jack Rye in the Benfield goal.
The forward got his second goal just minutes later.
Liam Noble’s ball found Hird down the line, who chipped a cross into the box, which was met by Hennis at the back post.
In the 54th minute, the third goal of the game was scored.
Following Keaton Marrs’ long kick from the goal, Benfield failed to deal with the bounce, and the ball fell to Hird, who finished well.
Easington got their fourth goal in the 78th minute, as Liam Wright curled a lovely free-kick into the box, which was met with a glancing header by Trewick.
With Benfield’s league status guaranteed for another season, all eyes will be on their Northumberland Senior Cup semi-final against Whitley Bay, with the winner playing at St. James’ Park in the final.
As for Easington, their season is pretty much done – with their final match being against Marske United.
