It’s an hour-long trip down the A19 for Ben Garrity’s girls as South Shields Women head down to Recar Town Ladies in the NERWFL Premier Division this Sunday.

South Shields head into the match having lost their previous two games, albeit against strong opponents in Alnwick Town Juniors Women and Chester-le-Street Town Ladies.

An inspired performance last time out saw the girls fall short against runaway leaders, Chester-le-Street, only losing out 3-2, in a match that was tied 1-1 at the break. No team has stopped Chester-le-Street from winning all of their 11 matches so far.

But the visitors may seek confidence in the fact that Redcar Town have been fairly inconsistent in the division: they were convincingly defeated 6-1 away to Sunderland West End Ladies and have won just three of their 10 matches so far.

Attention turns to Sunday, where South Shields are looking to consolidate second place in the league ahead of Wakefield AFC Ladies, as well as Alnwick Town Juniors, Wallsend BC Women and Sunderland West End who are bunched in the league close together.

An uneven number of matches played does make the table hard to interpret at this stage, but when adjusted for points per match to give a fairer assessment of the table, South Shields do come second along with Alnwick Town Juniors, at two points per game.

Redcar Town’s star players include Mary Corbyn, who has clocked in an impressive 14 goals in just 11 matches which puts her among the top goalscorers in the division, and Jessica Round with 11 goals scored in 13 games.

The match kicks off at 2pm at Redcar Town’s home stadium, the Vibrant Doors Stadium, at the Mo Mowlam Memorial Park (TS10 5BW).
