Sunderland fans top the charts for Championship away following
The Wearsiders’ away backing has been remarkable throughout the season and research conducted by EFL news outlet ‘The72’, demonstrates just how impressive it has been.
Tony Mowbray’s side achieved the unthinkable on Monday afternoon, securing a top six finish with a 3-0 victory away to Preston with 5,714 away fans in attendance, the highest away backing in the league this season.
Sunderland have seen 60,944 fans travel to the 23 away fixtures played this season, over 10 thousand more than Burnley in second place.
Whilst these numbers are impressive, they are even more so when taken into consideration the distance that they travel in comparison to other clubs with only Swansea City supporters having to travel more miles on average; 216 miles compared to Sunderland’s 198.

Sunderland supporters will again be in fine voice and outstanding numbers in the play-offs next week, with over 40,000 expected to be in attendance for the first leg against Luton Town at the Stadium of Light as well as selling out their away allocation for the second leg on Tuesday evening.
