Newcastle United flop the hero as Real Madrid reach the Champions League final
Following their dramatic semi-final first leg in Munich, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid clashed at the Santiago Bernabeu in a game not without controversy, however it was Real Madrid’s unsung hero Joselu with a quickfire double to send Real Madrid to Wembley where they meet Borussia Dortmund.
Bayern Munich opened the scoring on the night with Alphonso Davies, a substitute for the injured Serge Gnabry, in what was the first champions league goal of the Canadians career.
With Bayern seemingly in control a series of strange substitution changes from manager Thomas Tuchel with the change of defensive shape and introduction of Kim Min Jae invited pressure in the latter stages until Real Madrid found a way and broke through at the end.
Former Newcastle United striker Joselu, a second half substitute, capitalised on a Manuel Neuer error to draw the game level only to double his tally minutes later following a VAR check on a potential offside.
The two goals were enough to see Real Madrid through to a final with Joselu etching his name in the history books of the Los Blancos.
Joselu will be remembered for his stint at Newcastle in which he was not a success registering six goals in 46 appearances from 2017-2019. Returning to Spain with stints at Alaves and Espanyol saw promise and with Real Madrid losing Karim Benzema to Saudi Arabia Joselu was brought in on loan with a 1.5 million buy option.
Should Real Madrid win another Champions League the business to bring Joselu to the club will be monumental in continuing their success.
