Whitley Bay Beacons 3-5 Streatham Storm
Streatham came away with a 5-3 victory over Whitley Bay in the Women’s National Ice Hockey League Elite Division.
Streatham scored the first two goals of the first period from Jane Anne Drill in the second minute and Zuzana Dobrovolna in the sixth before Kaitlyn Morrison fired one back for Whitley in the 11th minute.
One minute into the second period, Angela Taylor scored for Streatham to make the score 1-3, before Ruby Newlands got one back for Whitley Bay in the seventh minute. However the Storm quickly reinstated their two goal lead just four minutes alter when Christine McLean found the net.
In the third period, Emily Luck scored for Whitley only to see Taylor score again in the seventh minute to make the score 3-5
The long trip to the North East was Streatham’s longest away trip of the season in the Women’s National Ice Hockey League Elite Division.
Streatham wasted no time getting on the scoresheet when Drill controlled the puck around the back of the goal before firing home to give her side the lead.
Things got worse for Whitley four minutes later when a turnover at the middle of the rink saw the Storm with two attackers against just one Whitley defender. Dobrovolna ensured the chance wasn’t wasted scoring Streatham’s second goal.
Whitley managed to get several shots away in the first period and were finally rewarded when Morrison slotted the puck past Streatham goaltender Charlotte Horvath one-on-one 11 minutes in.
Whitley goaltender Samantha Bolwell had an embarrassing moment to start the second period when she at first seemed to have saved a shot from Taylor, only to lose her grip on the puck and see it drop into the goal.
Whitley got themselves a second goal just two minutes later through a Newlands shot from close range.
Halfway through the second period, Streatham got a fourth goal when a pass in behind found Mclean who tapped it into an empty net.
Early on in the third period Whitley Bay got one back in controversial fashion when Luck found the back of the net despite appearing to be in an offside position.
Streahtam were quickly able to put this behind them after a skillful move from Taylor saw her get past Whitley’s defence before she scored her second goal of the game.
