Crystal Palace Women 2 Newcastle United Women 0
Crystal Palace Women are through to their first FA Cup quarter-final after a 2-0 victory over a spirited Newcastle United Women side.
Ashleigh Weerden opened the scoring for Palace in the 81st minute, before Abbie Larkin secured the win for the home side in stoppage time.
The Magpies came into the game after a 2-2 draw in their Women’s Championship match away at Southampton.
The hosts almost took the lead in the opening minute as Weerden had a chance from the centre of the box but her effort went just wide.
Palace came close again as Annabel Blanchard broke through the defence and her curled effort struck the woodwork.
Newcastle goalkeeper Claudia Moan was called into action again shortly after half-time, as Katie Stengel’s shot was kept out by Newcastle’s number 13.
Palace continued to have a flurry of chances, and Mille Geij grazed the crossbar with a great opportunity from outside the box.
The Eagles had much better chances and eventually made it count with ten minutes to go when Larkin lofted a cross to Weerden who finished well from close range.
Larkin then doubled the home sides’ lead in stoppage time to seal the victory, as her deflected strike looped over a helpless Moan in goal.
