Match Report: Heaton Stannington 1-2 Grimsby Borough
Heaton Stannington 1-2 Grimsby Borough
Grimsby Borough ended their seven-game winless run after beating ten-man Heaton Stannington on Saturday.
Scott Fenwick opened the scoring in the 25th minute for Grimsby, before Charlie Burden-Whittleton doubled the away sides’ lead with 15 minutes to go. Joe Shepherd got the home side back into it in the 82nd minute, but it turned out to be too little to late as Grimsby held on for a precious three points.
The Stan were looking to bounce back from a 3-0 loss to Carlton Town in their last outing, against a Grimsby Borough side in dire need of three points.
The Stan dominated the opening 20 minutes and came close after Daniel Stephenson’s blocked effort fell to Andrew Burn, who rolled his tame effort wide of the post.
Grimsby’s Fenwick punished the home side for missed opportunities, cutting in onto his right foot and firing it past the keeper at his near post, giving the away side the lead.
Richard Slaughter looked to level things up before the break as he got a shot away from the edge of the box but it flew over the crossbar.
It worsened for the home side soon after half-time, as a scuffle involving Daniel Groves and Kieran Perry resulted in The Stan defender Groves seeing red for violent conduct.
Five Minutes later, Whittleton battled his way into the box, and found the net with a left-footed strike across the goalkepeer, doubling the away sides advantage.
However, The Stan got one back in the 82nd minute, as Shepherd got his third goal of the season, bundling the ball into the net after meeting a looping cross at the back post.
The Stan almost found an equaliser, as Connor Walker’s powerful shot was blocked, before the home side squandered two more big chances. But Grimbsy were able to hold on for a rare away win.
