Gateshead suffer fifth successive defeat against Tamworth

Gateshead 0-2 Tamworth

Gateshead’s winless run continued as they suffered a fifth successive league defeat losing 2-0 to Tamworth at the Gateshead International Stadium.

Dan Creaney and Tom McGlinchey’s second half strikes in the 60th and 78th minute sealed a huge three points for Tamworth as they close in on a play-off spot, piling the pressure on Gateshead.

Carl Magnay made two changes to the side that suffered defeat to Braintree on Tuesday night. Liam Humbles and new signing Frank Nouble replaced Dan Jones and Tyrell Sellars-Fleming.

Nouble was handed his first start just hours after the announcement of his arrival. The 33-year-old has registered three goals and four assists in the league this season for Yeovil Town.

The visitors settled in quickly with McGlinchey bringing down a long ball from Tom Tonks, but his effort was too tame to trouble Tiernan Brooks.

The Lambs almost took the lead on 29 minutes when Tonks’ teasing long throw landed at the feet of Callum Cockerill-Mollet, but the defender was denied by Brooks from point blank range.

The hosts thought they’d opened the scoring on 40 minutes after some brilliant play from Humbles, his deflected effort was poked home by Jovan Malcolm, but the celebrations were cut short as he was deemed to have come from an offside position.

On the cusp of halftime, it was Tamworth who almost went into the break ahead. Another trademark long throw from Tonks fell to Cockerill-Mollett, but his acrobatic effort was dealt with by Brooks.

The Heed had a huge chance in the 58th minute when Nouble played Luke Hannant through after some great hold up play, but Hannant’s shot deflected narrowly wide for a corner.

An hour played and Tamworth took the lead through Creaney marking his 16th goal of the season. The striker jumped highest and headed home following a brilliant cross from Cockerill-Mollet.

Seven minutes later Creaney nearly had his second with another header, but Hannant was on guard to clear off the line.

Andy Peak’s side then doubled their advantage. Creaney this time the provider setting up McGlinchey who slotted home past Brooks.

Gateshead are back in National League action next Saturday away to top of the league Barnet in a 3pm kick off.
