Washington FC Women’s Coach explains enormous Euro’s effect on women’s football
Washington FC Women’s coach Wayne Phipps has seen the spike in players from the Euro 2021 competition and he’s expecting more of the same this summer.

The women’s 2021 Euro competition caused a visible growth in women’s football. More girls began playing the sport, and it was seen more often in mainstream media.
This summer will mark the beginning of Euro 2025 and there is hope this installment leads to the same sort of spike seen four years ago.
Wayne Phipps, Washington AFC Women’s first team coach, has 13 years of experience in women’s football, and has voiced his opinion on the growth of the game, and the potential for further growth this summer.
“I think it [Euro 2021 competition] had a massive effect on the women’s game, I saw the spike myself.
“You know, little girls who potentially wouldn’t have played but seen it all happen on telly and then all of a sudden, they want to be part of the club. “In this club alone, we’ve seen a massive spike with the amount of girls that wanted to be a part of it and still are a part of it.
“I think after [the Euro] 2025, the next generation will come through and are seeing what’s happened in the lady’s game where they can win trophies, they can be successful.
“The amount of ladies that are playing now, and the standard upon season is getting better and better.
“When I first started, we had one division for one age group. Now, pretty much every age group has a Premier League, a First Division, a Second Division.”
