South Shields 1-3 Shrewsbury Town: Mariners fall short in Emirates FA Cup 1st Round
A clinical Shrewsbury Town performance denied South Shields their own Emirates FA Cup history, despite fighting until the end in a 3-1 defeat at the 1st Cloud Arena on Sunday.
Anthony Scully’s first-half brace, as well as Tom Sang’s strike, gave Michael Appleton’s side a three-goal lead at half-time, before Luke Woolston’s effort triggered hopes of a comeback, but Salop held on to progress to the 2nd Round.
Sunday’s occasion was the Mariners’ third attempt at making it to the 2nd Round of the FA Cup in their 137-year history, but came into the game off the back of a 1-0 away loss to Macclesfield.
With the atmosphere lively at a sold-out 1st Cloud Arena, South Shields began aggressively and looked dangerous, with Oliver Bainbridge’s early effort being dragged just wide of the post.
However, midway through the first half, Shrewsbury were awarded a penalty, when Mal Benning was pushed by Caden Kelly in the box. Scully blasted the resulting spot-kick into the bottom left corner to put Salop into a one-goal lead.

Just over ten minutes later, Scully doubled his, and Shrewsbury’s tally, when John Marquis’ cross deflected into the path of Scully to slot into the back of the net.

Shields’ exit from the competition was virtually sealed just before the break, when Scully’s shot was parried by Jasper Sheik towards Sang, who rifled the ball into the back of the net.
After the interval, the Mariners piled on the pressure and found their reward. Sean McGurk pulled out some skill to pass the ball to Woolston, who scored an incredible goal from just within the box – flying into the top right corner.

Shiek did well to prevent Shrewsbury’s fourth, when Ismeal Kabia found himself one-on-one with the Shields ‘keeper, but Shiek denied the Shrewsbury full-back.
