Newcastle United Women 1-0 Southampton Women: Match Report

Newcastle United Women secured three points against Southampton and moved up to fourth in the WSL2 in new boss Tanya Oxtoby’s first game.

The Magpies made seven changes from their League Cup defeat to Everton before the international break, with Anna Tamminen, Charlotte Wardlow, Demi Stokes, Aiofe Mannion, Lois Joel and Molly Pike all coming into the side.

The hosts took the lead inside 14 minutes, as Wardlaw delivered a well-placed cross into the box, which was headed into the top left corner by Jordan Nobbs.

Newcastle United had a great chance to double their lead as Beth Lumsden snatched the ball from Isabel Watts on the left flank, before playing the ball to Pike, who lashed it over the bar.

Southampton also had a chance just before the end of the first half, as Ellie Brazil played a ball through to Atlanta Primus, whose shot was straight at Tamminen.

Southampton were the more dominant side in the first 15 minutes of the second half, as they tried to attack the Newcastle defence.

Both sides had their fair share of opportunities in the second half, but neither could take any of their chances.

Newcastle United secured their first three points under their new manager and moved up to fourth in the WSL2.

The Magpies’ next league clash is away to Portsmouth at Westleigh Park on December 21st.
