SPORTSBYTE ORIGINS
The University of Sunderland’s Institute of Sport launched SportsByte in October 2011, creating an initial opportunity for Journalism and Media students to get involved in an Industry standard learning environment, whilst helping to improve Sports coverage and content within the City.
From their work at the forefront of Sport and Media in Sunderland, the University were passionate about improving the knowledge and awareness of teams, clubs, programmes, and issues that are typically crowded out by other news stories and features in local and regional press. The two primary objectives of providing first rate journalism and coverage for sport within the area, as well as real-life and professional experience for students studying Journalism, are a perfect match. SportsByte operates like any other newsroom in the UK, with an editorial team, reporters, feature writers, bloggers, analysts, and other back of house staff, all producing content 24/7, 365 days a year via the website, TV, radio (broadcast on 107 SparkFM), mobile app, and magazine.
The online news portal currently boasts a student workforce of over 150 people, which enables a huge number of sports and programmes to be covered throughout the region, bringing them much needed exposure.SPORTSBYTE TEAM
