Bishop Auckland advance in the Durham Challenge Cup

Seaham Red Star exited the first round of the Durham Challenge Cup after a 1-0 defeat away at Bishop Auckland.

The only goal of the game came at the end of the second half as Matthew Waters’ strike was enough to see Auckland through.

Bishop Auckland received a red card as Wayne Whitfield received his marching orders for time wasting with 3 minutes left on the clock.

Seaham made the semi finals of the competition in 2020 after eventually being beaten 4-2 by Sunderland U23’s.

It wasn’t until 10 minutes in for a chance to arise as Louis Anderson was fouled on the edge of the area however Jamie Clark’s free kick could do nothing more than sting the palms of Nicholas Liversedge.

In the 22nd minute Bishop Auckland striker Wayne Whitfield broke free and released Lewis Suddick whose low strike forced a smart save from Andrew Jennison’s feet.

Minutes after a long Jordan Patterson free kick into the area fell kindly to Mark Robinson who could only find the side netting from 6 yards out.

The only goal of the game came in the 37th minute as Suddick played in a corner which wasn’t fully dealt with by Seaham and Matthew Waters slotted the ball home from the edge of the area.

Five minutes after the break Joe Hailes cut in from the left flank finding Mark Robinson on the edge of the area who struck an effort which was just wide of the Bishop Auckland post.

On the hour mark Josh Baggs found James Robinson down the touchline who put an emphatic delivery into the area finding Jamie Clark at the back post who put the ball just wide of the empty net.

Bishop Auckland were reduced to 10 men with three minutes of regular time to go as Wayne Whitfield was flagged offside however decided to kick the ball away and received his second yellow card as a result.
