Newcastle United’s Premier League fixture against Aston Villa this Friday has been postponed.

A decision was made after several of Newcastle United’s playing and coaching staff tested positive for COVID-19. The training ground has now been closed to stop the spread of the virus.

The Premier League board accepted The Magpies’ request following their appeal to postpone the game due to first team players being unable to train as a group ahead of the fixture.

Villa Park was supposed to host the game on Friday evening in an 8pm kick off, both clubs have assured the match will be rescheduled to a new date in due course.

A statement on www.nufc.co.uk read: “While the club has continued to ensure strict adherence to these protocols and despite previously containing only a very small number of isolated Covid-19 cases, positive test results have risen sharply in recent days.

“The club will not be naming individuals who have contracted Covid-19 and asks that their privacy is respected.”
